La película de Luc Besson "The Lady", inspirada en la líder pro democracia de Myanmar y ganadora del premio Nobel de la Paz Aung San Suu Kyi, abrirá el Festival Internacional de Cine de Roma, que se celebrará del 27 de octubre al 4 de noviembre.
El filme, presentado fuera de la competencia, cuenta la lucha política y personal de Suu Kyi y está protagonizada por la actriz de Hollywood Michelle Yeoh, criticada por las autoridades de Myanmar por participar en la película.
"La historia personal de Aung San Suu Kyi y su continua lucha por la democracia me inspiró y emocionó profundamente, y espero que a través de esta película su causa y voz sean más conocidas y compartidas", dijo el francés Besson en el anuncio del festival.
"The Lady" es una historia de amor entre Suu Kyi y su difunto marido Michael Aris, y describe su larga separación mientras ella estuvo detenida en 1989.
Las autoridades en Myanmar pusieron a Yeoh en una lista negra por su papel en el filme y la deportaron cuando voló al país en junio.
